Hiking in the Swiss canton of Valais (Wallis)
The Swiss canton of Valais (Wallis in German) is, well, a valley. A very wide, very long valley, with the Rhône running through and the Alps rising steeply on either side to heights of over 4,000 m.
All those mountains means many, many hiking trails — as well as via ferrata, skiing and other adventure options. Valais is home to Switzerland’s highest mountain — Monte Rosa — and popular travel destinations such as Zermatt, the Matterhorn, and the ski resorts of Champéry, Verbier and Crans-Montana.
In addition to Switzerland’s highest peaks, Valais is also known for being the sunniest canton north of the Alps — which makes hiking here even more attractive.
